Approved Graffiti

Thursday, March 30, 2006

For those of you who decided to take one of the several panels home, here is the e-mail if it could not be read on its back:

approvedgraf@hotmail.com

Please e-mail an image (or images) of what you did with the panel you took home and a description of what happened to it. It can be as in depth as you wish, as long as you tell us where it ended up (ie. Given to family, sent to another country, etc.)

It is important you send these descriptions so that we can begin to compile a PDF that contains pictures and info on our project and will be concluded with section pertaining to what you have done with the art. The PDF will hopefully be available for download within a week or two. Also if anyone took pictures of the Graffiti project, please send any extra pictures to the e-mail above.

Thank You

Promotion Meeting Notes:

Hey everyone, as you all know the Promotion and Build teams held a meeting this last Wednesday, some people showed up, abut alot were missing. I'd just want to remind everyone that it's really REALLY important that we meet up as many times as we can during this week, as time is REALLY not on our side.

Heres what the Promo team discussed at the meeting:

  • Since we don't have very much time, we need to get the word out there ASAP. The build team has confirmed that the project name is now BREAK THE LAW/MAKE SOME ART. So inlight of this name, we have decided to get a poster out ASAP promoting it. Since the words BREAK THE LAW are very eye catching, and will definatly get some attention, we decided that for our first poster, we are going to use that to our advantage. The poster will be a tabloid print (17" x 11") that will have a peice of police caution tape ripped, and in the middle, in large large type we are going to have "BREAK THE LAW" below it we will describe the exhibition, and the information on where it will be held etc.
  • Mel has also come up with a great idea for "Take home art" playing ofthis idea, we planned on having a series of poster that should be up by the middle of next week. The series will be of Graffiti art. The posters will be long and narrow (8.25" x 14") Each poster will have different urban/graffiti style drawing on it. Because of this, we need ART. Any kind of urban art/graffiti art is very much appreciated. Cartoons, Characatures, Doodles! Anything is great. Line Drawings/Colored Line Drawings are prefered! Please send these to bardiad@gmail.com or give them to Bardia in class.
  • Our final promotional idea, will only be possible if we all work togther. Again, because time is limited, we need everyones participation! Basically, we'd like to play of the idea of paint cans and spray paint cans. Because of all the built up excitment from the 2 prior promotions, a couple days before the show, we wanted to infest the school with paint cans/spray cans as a type of publicity stunt. We would post all the information ON the cans themselves and leave them all around the lounges and public areas. We NEED to find where we can get old used paint buckets, paint tubs or spray paint cans. Any kind of spray can/arrasol can will do (hair spray, moose etc) but it should resemble spray paint cans. We will later plaster these with paint and post the info on them.

All other ideas are welcome, if you have anything you think would be a great promotion, please send them to bardiad@gmail.com

Thanks again guys!

Our Location:

I've negotiated our location in the park, and we're going to be somewhere along the chain-link fence on the west side of the park, likely in the grassy region across from the back of Aboveground.

On that note, I recommend that you steer yourselves away from any "lounge" interpretations of the project, because:
-we have a long and narrow site to occupy, and (more importantly)
-there are at least two other projects with a lounge theme, and we want to stand out from them (don't we?)

I recommend starting your discussion with the "wall" interpretation, and see where you can take it from there. You'll be able to attach the "wall" to the fence (though it's not that sturdy), so consider the ramifications of that. Or maybe you want people to be able to inhabit the space behind the wall? Thing big, bold and beautiful. . . you're going to be across from a noisy project, so make your competition visual. Do not expect your space to be idyllic. . . it will be in the midst of cacophany.

To consider:
-how do people interact with the wall?
-how do we encourage (ie create affordances) and control (ie provide constraints) this interaction?
-how do we sustain interest for 3 hours? how does the project evolve with time?
-what is the final product? how do we dispense with it?
-what is the projects message? how does it make the viewer think? what issues does it raise? what discourse does it contribute to?
-how do we avoid a cliche, a one liner, an empty idea?
-how do we make it spectacular, but not lose control?

Press Release. . .

Could the Promotions group please ensure that a one-sentence description of our project is sent to Mike, who will forward it on the Shawn Micallef, one of the other POID instructors, who has generously offered to send out a press release.

Get this done by Wednesday, or we won't get mentioned.

Things we can and can't do. . .

I went to a meeting last night with the other POID instructors, and was provided with the following list of things we can and can't do. Please refer to this when considering the project.

-we CAN have power, but need to identify any power needs right away
-we CAN lean things against the building and attach things to the fence
-we CAN leak water soluble things onto the grass and pavement (ie water-based paint. . . is this available in spray form?)
-we CAN put stakes into the ground, but need to submit a diagram
-we CAN make noise, but risk getting shut down if things get too noisy
-we CAN store things in our classroom, provided we take up as little room as possible and put our names on everything

-we CAN'T use bikes, skateboards, scooters or alcohol (so no bike rental)
-we CAN'T expand into Grange Park or the AGO construction parking lot
-we CAN'T get things like glitter on the grass that would be impossible to remove
-we CAN'T attach anything to the legs of the building - no tape, no rope, no magnets, nothing
-we CAN'T disobey Plant Services, who will be sniffing around for infractions
-we CAN'T do any electrical wiring on our own
-we CAN'T store anything outside of our classroom until 3:30 on the Wednesday before the big day, after which we'll have access to the auditorium and the room beside the auditorium

Make sure you read the comments! Mike has left an excellent comment on the Banksy site.

Reminder: please create thank-you cards for the Ontario Science Centre!

As I mentioned in the last class, we need to thank the Ontario Science Centre for the excellent tour they gave us on February 24. Our tour guide's name was Jerry Newton, and my original contact was Joe Sponder. Create whatever you like - anything that is suitable will be signed by the class, forwarded to the OSC, and the creator will be rewarded with significant participation bonus marks.

OK!

The blog for Michael Erdmann and Jesse Jackson's POID class and their soon-to-be-amazing "Activate The Park" project is now up and running. Post well, and post often. . . share anything that comes to mind. Mike and I will check the blog frequently and make suggestions. But don't let us steer you too much. . . part of the "activation" is the class collective taking ownership of this project and running with it.

Just like project #3, it's best to not get married to a final solution too early. Go with the flow, share your thoughts, and trust your gut.
